J. J. Butterfield standing at the cashier counter after the remodel in 1929.
The Farmers & Merchants State Bank's interior underwent a remodel in 1929 after a bank robbery and kidnapping of J. J. Butterfield in September of 1928,
A new service counter was installed to shield bank employees from customers, complete with armored steel plate. A complicated system of mirrors showed the employee to be standing in the service window, when in fact, they were standing to the side, out of harm’s way. There were even ports in the shield through which employees could shoot if needed.
