Mayor Staats is a former Board Member of the Derby Chamber of Commerce and Derby Education Foundation. He is the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the El Paso Water Company and an Ex officio member of the Derby Public Library Board of Trustees. Staats is also a Civic Leader for the U.S. Air Force Air Mobility Command representing McConnell Air Force Base.

His priorities for the City of Derby include public safety (police and fire services), economic development, park enhancements, and maintaining financial stability. Mayor Staats' goals include maintaining a small-town quality of life in a growing community.

Staats has lived in Derby since 1979. He retired from the Derby Police Department as a sergeant and is currently the President & CEO of the Derby Chamber of Commerce.

He and his wife, Echo, have a son, Mason, who is a police officer with the City of Derby, making him the first legacy officer in the department. He is also a member of Life.Church Derby.
