Other Early Doctors of Derby
Dr. John Berger, who was born on Dec. 25, 1842 in Indiana, came to Kansas in 1872 from Warren County, Iowa with his father Darius, who passed in 1878. The two men had a farm east of Mulvane. While improving the claim, Berger also practiced medicine. He later lived in Udall, Clearwater, Elk County, and in Derby. He was listed as living in the Derby area with the occupation of physician in the 1875 Kansas state census and the 1880 federal census. Dr. Berger died at his home in Derby on Feb. 24, 1894 and with his father is buried in the Union Cemetery located on S. 159th St. E. outside of Derby. John was survived by his widow Catherine (Weiss) Berger and seven children: Zilla, Charles, Frank, Herbert, Lillie, Mary, and John.
Dr. George Washington Harper (G. W. Harper) was born Dec. 19, 1852 in Indiana. Harper, his wife, and daughter were listed in the 1880 federal census in Derby. He had been a resident and practicing physician in the Derby area for almost three years when he died of a hemorrhage of the lungs in Sept. 9, 1880 at the age of 27. He was buried in the El Paso Cemetery. Dr. Harper was survived by his widow Mary Jeannette (Pierson) Harper and their two children: one year old daughter Martha May and son George W., Jr. (born a month later).
Dr. W. B. Foster was born in May 1856 in Iowa and came to the Derby area around the early part of 1884. In 1892, he married Carrie (Nachtrieb) Berger, the eldest daughter of Charles and Jane Nachtrieb. The couple moved to Dickinson County around 1895. Carrie passed away on Nov. 6, 1915 in Woodbine, Kansas and was buried in the El Paso Cemetery in Derby. Dr. Foster remarried in 1917 to Mrs. Elizabeth (Fuller) Simpson in Woodbine and the couple stayed in the community until his death on Dec. 11, 1936. After his passing, he was cremated and his ashes were interred in his first wife Carrie's grave. His second wife Elizabeth's ashes were also interred in El Paso Cemetery.
Dr. Benjamin Franklin Youngs (B. F. Youngs) was born on Nov. 11, 1839 in Fayette County, Indiana and died on Dec. 20, 1914 at his home in Howard, Kansas. He married Cordelia Morris in 1863 and they eventually moved to the Derby area in 1886. Youngs set up his practice and residence in Derby until 1894 when he moved to Howard, Kansas. He was buried in the Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard, Kansas. Dr. B. F. Youngs was survived by his widow Cordelia (Morris) Youngs and three of his eight children: Della, William, and Frank.
Dr. Joseph Blaise was born in France on Dec. 12, 1821 and died in Rockford Township on Aug. 30, 1890. His obituary states that at the age of fifteen he enlisted in the French army in Africa. He came to America in 1857 and eventually located in El Paso in 1879. Blaise was listed in the 1885 Kansas state census as a physician in El Paso. He might have been a highly respected citizen of the town but he also made the paper a few times for abusing his daughters and performing an illegal abortion for someone in Wichita. Dr. Blaise is buried in the El Paso Cemetery and was survived by son Thomas and three daughters: Della, Anna, and Emma.
